Cardiac Stress Test (Ergometry)

ECG and blood pressure monitoring on a treadmill to evaluate your heart's response to exercise under medical supervision.

What symptoms or cases is it used for?

A cardiac stress test is highly useful to understand how your cardiovascular system behaves during exercise, not just at rest. It is frequently requested if you experience:

  • Chest pain, tightness, or pressure during physical activity.
  • Shortness of breath that feels disproportionate to your exertion level.
  • Palpitations that occur specifically when walking, climbing stairs, or training.
  • You want to start or resume a high-intensity exercise routine safely.
  • We need to measure your functional capacity and physical exercise tolerance objectively.

How does it work?

Ergometry is performed on a medical treadmill using a standardized protocol where the speed and incline increase progressively. Throughout the test, we record your ECG and measure your blood pressure at each stage.

Its main objective is to evaluate your cardiovascular system under stress, helping to identify silent ischemia, exercise-induced arrhythmias, and abnormal blood pressure responses.

What do you receive at the end?

  • Detailed clinical report including ECG findings during peak exercise and recovery stages.
  • Graph showing blood pressure and heart rate variations during exertion.
  • Detailed calculation of your functional capacity (measured in METs) and safe training heart rate ranges.

The Dr. Castolo Difference

The value of a stress test is not in walking on the treadmill; it lies in the meticulous clinical monitoring and your absolute safety. Unlike other centers where the study might be delegated to technicians or nurses, Dr. Karla Castolo (certified cardiologist) personally supervises and interprets your stress test minute-by-minute in Hospiten Puerto Vallarta, ensuring an immediate medical response to any changes.

Furthermore, your official clinical report (both printed and digital) is prepared and delivered immediately after the test, allowing you to walk out with clear diagnoses and exercise recommendations without delay.

How is the study performed?

Initial Setup

We place ECG electrodes on your chest and take baseline blood pressure readings. We review instructions and verify that it is clinically safe to proceed.

Exercise Stages

You start walking on the treadmill. Every 3 minutes, the speed and incline increase slightly. We continuously monitor your cardiac rhythm, blood pressure, and symptoms.

Recovery Phase

Once you reach your target effort or need to stop, the treadmill slows down. We keep monitoring your vital signs for a few minutes while your heart rate returns to normal.

Report & Interpretation

We finalize the clinical reports and discuss the findings, heart capacity, and next steps immediately with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the test hurt?
It is not painful. It is a progressive physical effort on a treadmill. You will feel typical fatigue or shortness of breath from exercise, just like during a workout.
Is it safe?
Yes. The test is performed in a controlled clinical office in Hospiten, with continuous ECG monitoring and blood pressure checks, under the direct supervision of a cardiologist. We follow strict safety protocols.
Do I need to fast?
A complete fast is not required, but you should avoid heavy meals for 3 to 4 hours before the test. It is mandatory to avoid caffeine, tea, sodas, chocolate, tobacco, or energy drinks on the day of the study, as stimulants alter your resting heart rate and can invalidate the results.
Should I stop taking my medications?
Please do not suspend or adjust your daily medications without consulting us. If any specific medication needs to be paused for the study, we will instruct you when scheduling.
Is it the same as a stress echocardiogram?
No. Standard ergometry monitors ECG activity, blood pressure, and heart rate during exercise. A stress echocardiogram also captures ultrasound imaging of the heart chambers and valves immediately after exertion, which is used for specific cases.
Why is a stress test needed if my resting ECG was normal?
A resting electrocardiogram (ECG) can be completely normal in up to 50% of patients with mild or moderate coronary artery disease. This is because resting blood flow to the heart is usually sufficient; however, under the physical exertion of exercise, oxygen demand increases, revealing potential blockages or circulation issues.
Who supervises the stress test and is it safe?
For your absolute safety, Dr. Karla Castolo (a certified cardiologist) personally supervises and interprets the test minute-by-minute inside the clinical facilities of Hospiten Puerto Vallarta, fully equipped to respond to any eventuality immediately.
When do I get my stress test results?
Your results are delivered immediately upon completion of the study. Dr. Karla Castolo will provide your official printed and digital clinical report with her detailed medical interpretation and explain the findings and recommended next steps.
