Sometimes it is related to something temporary (such as a respiratory infection, stress or poor physical condition), but it can also be a sign of a heart, lung or blood problem. The important thing is to identify when it is an emergency and when a cardiology evaluation is appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The most important<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is urgent if shortness of breath appears suddenly, is intense, occurs at rest or is accompanied by chest pain, fainting, confusion or purple lips or fingernails.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It may be heart-related if it worsens with exertion, if it appears when you lie down or if it wakes you up at night with a choking sensation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can't always tell the cause just by \u201chow you feel\u201d. If it is a new symptom, repeats or limits your daily life, it is worth evaluating.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is \u201cshortness of breath\u201d?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It does not always feel like \u201cI'm short of breath\u201d. It may present as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You get more tired than usual with daily activities (walking, climbing stairs, carrying bags).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeling that \u201cnot enough air is coming in\u201d.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tightness of breathing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Need to stop to catch your breath<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choking at bedtime<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When is it urgent?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Seek immediate medical attention if shortness of breath:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Appears suddenly and is intense<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Occurs at rest and prevents you from speaking complete sentences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accompanied by pain or pressure in the chest, cold sweat, nausea or paleness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accompanied by fainting, confusion or marked drowsiness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is purple\/bluish coloration of lips or nails.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rapidly worsens<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If there are also chest pains, check for <a href=\"https:\/\/drakarlacastolo.com\/en\/blog\/emergencies\/chest-pain-in-an-emergency\/\">chest pain: common causes and when is it an emergency?<\/a> when it is published. If this is increasing, it's an important finding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choking at bedtime<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You need more pillows or feel short of breath when you lie down. Many people describe it as \u201cI have to sit up to breathe better\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Waking up at night with choking sensation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You wake up in the early morning with shortness of breath and need to sit up or walk around a bit to feel better. If it happens again, it is worth checking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leg swelling or rapid weight gain<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fluid retention can accompany heart pumping problems. You can read more in <a href=\"https:\/\/drakarlacastolo.com\/en\/blog\/cardiac-conditions\/cardiac-insufficiency\/\">cardiac insufficiency<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Problems with blood supply to the heart (ischemia\/angina)<\/strong><br>In some people, the main symptom is not pain, but shortness of breath on exertion, especially if there are risk factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Arrhythmias<\/strong><br>Very fast or irregular heartbeats can lead to shortness of breath, fatigue and decreased exercise tolerance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other common causes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Respiratory<\/strong><br>Asthma, respiratory infections, bronchitis or pneumonia can cause shortness of breath, coughing or \u201cwheezing\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Anemia<\/strong><br>May cause shortness of breath with exertion, palpitations and fatigue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Poor physical condition or weight gain<\/strong><br>After a sedentary lifestyle, prolonged stress or weight changes, it is common to become more tired. Even so, if the change is noticeable or rapid, it is worth evaluating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Anxiety<\/strong><br>It can cause rapid breathing, tightness and choking sensation. Important: Just because it looks like anxiety does not mean it always is.
