Sometimes it is due to something relatively common such as reflux or muscle tension, but at other times it can be an emergency. The key is to recognize warning signs and know when not to wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TL;DR (the essentials)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consider <strong>urgency<\/strong> if the pain is severe, comes on suddenly, lasts more than a few minutes, or is accompanied by shortness of breath, cold sweat, nausea, dizziness or fainting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not all chest pain is a heart attack, but <strong>cannot be ruled out with certainty without a medical evaluation.<\/strong>, especially if it is a new symptom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have reasonable doubt, <strong>it is safer to go to the emergency room<\/strong> to wait.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can chest pain be felt?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not always felt as \u201cpain\u201d in the strict sense. It can present itself as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pressure or tightness in the center of the chest<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeling of weight or \u201csqueezing\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Burning similar to heartburn<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discomfort that moves or radiates to the arm, neck, back, or jaw<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sensation that appears with exertion (climbing stairs, fast walking) or even at rest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why the context and accompanying symptoms matter so much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warning signs: when is it an emergency?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Seek immediate medical attention if chest pain:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is new, intense, sudden or <strong>does not yield<\/strong> in a few minutes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feels like marked pressure\/oppression (not just an isolated \u201csting\u201d)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is accompanied by <strong>shortness of breath<\/strong>, cold sweat, nausea, vomiting, unusual weakness, dizziness, or fainting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Radiating to one or both arms, back, neck, jaw, or upper abdomen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Appears together with very rapid\/irregular palpitations and a feeling of significant discomfort.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In women, older adults and people with diabetes, symptoms may be less \u201ctypical\u201d. In these cases, it is even better not to minimize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to do if you suspect an emergency?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do not attempt to drive if the pain is severe or there are warning signs. They serve to understand why pain can be confusing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1) Cardiac causes (the most important to rule out)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Angina or ischemia (decreased blood supply to the heart)<\/strong><br>It usually feels like pressure\/oppression. May appear with exertion or stress and improve with rest. Sometimes radiates to the arm, neck, back or jaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Infarction<\/strong><br>It may feel like pressure, tightness or persistent pain. Sometimes it is accompanied by shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, malaise or a feeling of \u201csomething is not right\u201d. It is not always sudden or \u201cdramatic\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the pain comes with irregular heartbeats, check <a href=\"https:\/\/drakarlacastolo.com\/en\/blog\/diagnostic-evaluation\/palpitations-common-causes-and-when-to-worry\/\">palpitations: common causes and when to worry about them<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2) Respiratory causes (lung\/pleura)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>They usually give pain that worsens with deep breathing or coughing. There may be shortness of breath, fever or respiratory symptoms. Depending on the case, serious causes are ruled out in the emergency department when the symptoms suggest it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3) Digestive causes (very frequent)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>reflux<\/strong> may cause retrosternal (behind the sternum) burning, sometimes after eating or at bedtime. It can be confused with cardiac pain.<br>Caution: if the pain is new, intense or comes with warning signs, do not assume \u201cit is reflux\u201d without assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4) Musculoskeletal causes (muscle\/ribs\/chest)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Localized pain that increases with movement, posture or pressure on the area. It may appear after carrying weight, doing unusual exercise or spending many hours in bad posture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5) Stress and anxiety<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>They can cause chest tightness, rapid breathing, palpitations, choking sensation or fear. It is real and can be very intense, but may resemble cardiac causes. If it is new or strong, it is worth evaluating.
